Congress: 100 Years of the ‘Malines Conversations’ Between Catholics and Anglicans
Between 1921 and 1925, Cardinal Désiré-Joseph Mercier, then Archbishop of Mechelen, invited a select group of individuals to engage in discussions on the potential reunion of the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches. These meetings, known as the Malines Conversations, were held in a spirit of friendship at the episcopal palace in Mechelen. Among the key participants were Charles Wood, 2nd Viscount Halifax, representing the Anglican side, and Catholic priest Fernand Portal.
To mark the centenary of the Malines Conversations, the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels, in collaboration with KU Leuven and UC Louvain, will host an academic congress from Thursday, September 18, to Saturday, September 20, 2025.
